Road should be slightly wider for furthest right lane

Reported via mobile in the Road surface (NH) category anonymously at 19:21, Sunday 26 July 2026

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 9849977.

Please make furthest right lane wider where it starts and start it slightly earlier and also fill in edge further too as is a big dip of edge of road

This would allow more people to get into the fourth lane to go right.

When the road is busy are lots of lorries and people can't get in to the 4th lane before the lights change. If it was a little wider and started a car or twos length earlier. This would help throughput going right. Which would then stop the chance of cars having to wait on the M18 in 70mph motorway before exit starts which is very unsafe by design

This improvement would help reduce congestion and improve safety of this junction.

Any further questions feel free to get in contact.

Updates

  • Thank you for your suggestion regarding the M18 junction layout. We appreciate your comments and understand your concerns regarding congestion and the potential safety implications of vehicles queuing to access the right-turn lane. At present, there are no plans to widen this slip road or amend the lane layout at this location. However, National Highways regularly reviews the safety and operational performance of the Strategic Road Network. Feedback from road users forms an important part of this process and helps us identify locations that may require further consideration. We have recorded your suggestion on our Customer Needs Register so that it can be considered alongside other safety, operational and improvement opportunities as part of our future programme planning. Thank you again for bringing this to our attention.
