Dear Highways Team, I would like to report a significant build-up of litter on the grassed areas alongside the A1. The litter is spread across the left, middle, and right sections of the green verge. I first reported this issue at the beginning of the year, but unfortunately nothing appears to have been done. The grass has since been cut, which shows that maintenance has taken place, but the litter was not collected and remains scattered across the area. When I previously reported this, I was advised that grass cutting and litter collection are normally carried out together. However, this does not appear to have happened, and the amount of litter continues to be unacceptable. Could you please arrange for the litter to be cleared and advise when this is likely to take place? Thank you for your attention to this matter. Kind regards, Joanna

  We have passed your report to our local inspector who will review the issue as part of their next safety inspection and arrange any remedial action.

  Littering by people is, unfortunately, a behaviour that has a big impact on some parts of our roads. We aim to keep our roads as tidy and free of litter as we can. Our litter picking is carefully planned to try to minimise the impact it has on road users and the safety of our people.

  Litter picks often require lane closures, which are disruptive to traffic flow. To help reduce the frequency of this disruption, where we can, we usually combine our reactive litter picks with other maintenance work which can result in what appears to be a delayed response.
