Road closed signage on A21 northbound

Reported via desktop in the Electronic Sign (NH) category anonymously at 15:25, Wednesday 1 July 2026

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 9716492.

On an evening journey north on the A21 last night, Tue 30 June, 7.30pm ,between Hastings and Hurst Green, we were notified on at least 3 separate occasions on 3 different sign types that the A21 was completely closed variously at Station Road, or Bodiam Road. We were fairly sure this was wrong ,having come down south the same morning without issue, and also judging by the volume of traffic still travelling in the opposite direction (south) to us, (north) in the evening. And so it proved to be, no obstructions or closures whatsoever on this section heading north, Hastings to Paddock Wood in fact, despite at least 3 different signs in various places, 2 yellow and black metal, 1 electronic dot matrix on a small trailer, advising to the contrary. Clearly work had been undertaken judging by the other signage and number of traffic cones about, but definitely no closures in evidence. What is it with your contractors management that they are quite unable to give accurate signage on the main trunk road to and from the Kent coast, or amend the existing signage when clearly work has been completed? I find it incredible in this day and age that motorists can potentially be sent needlessly far off route for no other reason than incompetent or just plain lazy contractors. Apart from being lazy, this is potentially dangerous, sending vehicles down less suitable roads needlessly if sat nav systems are blindly followed. Can this be fixed NOW please.

  • Thank you for making your report. We have asked our inspection team to attend this location and assess the issue.

If any work is needed, they will arrange for this to happen. Should no immediate work be required we will continue to monitor this during our regular inspections. Although we always aim to complete repairs as quickly as possible, timescales do vary as we try to minimise disruption to customers by combining activities into single closures and always ensuring the safety of our people. Kind regards,
