Damaged pedestrian bridge mesh and scooter trapped on bridge above M2 slip road near Elgin Gardens, Strood

The pedestrian bridge and underpass connecting Elgin Gardens, Strood to Ranscombe Farm have multiple safety issues. Parts of the bridge safety mesh are damaged and bent, including a metal section sticking out at head height which I almost walked into. There is also a water bottle and a scooter stuck on top of the bridge mesh structure, which could potentially fall onto pedestrians or traffic below. There is a large amount of broken glass, litter, and graffiti throughout the underpass and surrounding walkway area. The route is regularly used by pedestrians, cyclists, dog walkers visiting Ranscombe Farm, so the current condition presents a safety concern and would benefit from inspection and maintenance.

Our inspection team attended the location on 8 May 2026 to assess the issues. Remedial works have been raised with our maintenance partners to remove litter and glass from the subway floor, secure the metal strip to the roof, and straighten or replace the roof mesh panels as soon as possible.
Work is expected to be completed within the next 7 working days.
