Speed limit
Reported via mobile in the Electronic Sign (NH) category anonymously at 19:02, Thursday 2 April 2026
Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 9232842.
Speed limit 50 for no reason. No traffic or congestion is in that stretch. I am a regular M6 user and the speed limit has been 50 by the service station for weeks! There is no need, this dangerous for road users needing to dramatically slow down from the national speed limit for no reason. I've travelled multiple times at different times of the day, morning, afternoon, evening, night time and ut has been 50 every time, even when the road is completely empty and dead. This is obviously deliberately done by the camera to catch people out, and make money rather than the safety of road users.

Thank you for contacting National Highways.
I’m sorry for the confusion and inconvenience the speed limit has caused, especially when there’s no obvious reason for it.
A 50mph speed restriction is in place over a small number of gantries southbound near Stafford Services, following a recent incident in which a vehicle left the carriageway and damaged equipment that forms part of the smart motorway’s technology infrastructure.
This damaged equipment is essential for safely operating the motorway’s systems. Until it can be reinstated, our control room has implemented a temporary reduced speed limit in that immediate area as a safety precaution. We’re working to reinstall the affected technology over the coming weeks, after which the temporary restrictions will be reviewed and adjusted accordingly. I hope this clarifies the cause of the restriction, the repair timescale and the safety measures currently in place.
I hope this also helps to explain the speed limit you witnessed.
Kind regards
National Highways
