While I understand that variable speed limits can sometimes feel frustrating for road users, they play an important role in keeping traffic moving safely. Please be aware that mandatory variable speed limits must be complied with, regardless of why they are set, and the police are responsible for enforcing the law. In this case, a faulty bridge joint required us to temporarily set the 50mph limits at this location until this was repaired. I appreciate that this situation may be inconvenient. However, any limit displayed within a red circle is legally enforceable and must be obeyed, regardless of the reason it has been set. Compliance with signs and signals is vitally important to ensure the safety of everyone involved. National Highways takes the safety of all road users very seriously and we’re committed to ensuring all our customers have safe and reliable journeys on our network. Drivers should obey the last speed limit that was displayed until they’re notified that the speed limit has ended, or that a different speed limit now applies instead. A blank signal after an active signal does not mean that the earlier speed limit no longer applies. Please accept our apologises for any inconvenience caused and we thank you for your patience whilst this was resolved.
