Litter coming off Junction 31 M1

  We are aware of litter at this location, and we understand and share your concerns.

  Littering by people is, unfortunately, a behaviour that has a big impact on some parts of our roads. We aim to keep our roads as tidy and free of litter as we can. Our litter picking is carefully planned to try to minimise the impact it has on road users and the safety of our people.

  Under the provisions of the Environmental Protection Act 1990, National Highways is responsible for collecting litter on England’s motorways. Local authorities are, in the main, responsible for litter clearing on A-roads (All Purpose Trunk Roads) which are part of the Strategic Road Network.

  We are responsible for litter management on the slip roads of the M1 at junction 31 and we can advise that we carried out litter picks along these slip roads earlier this month and we continue to monitor them.

  However, the A57 section you reference, including the roundabout area, is a trunk road where management of litter clearance lies with the local authority, Rotherham Metropolitan Council. Sheffield Council also has some responsibility for the A57 in this area.

  We have reported this litter to the local authorities concerned but we’d also recommend that you report this issue to them too.
