Two dead foxes and three dead badgers

A collection of dead foxes and badgers along the same 200m stretch on the A66 eastbound between the B6274 and Moor Road turnoff. They’re all on the verge. The first dead fox appeared just over a month ago, and the most recent dead animal (a badger) appeared about a week ago. There are now 5 large dead mammals along that 200m stretch right on the edge of the road.

Safety is our highest priority and any animals on the carriageway that pose a risk to vehicles and their occupants will be removed as quickly and safely as possible.
Household pets, such as dogs and cats, will be retrieved, and we endeavour to reunite pets with their owners if they can be identified through microchips or other identification.
Wild animals, lying off the carriageway, on verges or the central reservation, are normally left to naturally decay. However, they will be removed if they are considered a hazard, a danger to public health or there is a statutory obligation for testing or removal.
Our local inspector team will make these assessments during their next regular safety inspection.
