Water on road
Reported via desktop in the Road surface (NH) category by Andrew Newmarch at 13:32, Wednesday 11 March 2026
Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 9087602.
Water cannot drain off this road surface and into the drains. The problem is that there is grass and a raised lip alongside the edge of the carriageway, which prevents the water from reaching the drains. As a result, large puddles extend into the fast lane and vehicles aquaplane.
I have previously reported this exact same problem, but the reply came back saying that this was not the responsibility of Highways England. I double-checked and then submitted another report. The response then stated that I should contact Highways England, and an email address was provided before the report was closed.
It therefore seems very difficult to get anybody at Highways England to acknowledge that there is a problem on this road, and it could be very serious if people are killed.
This problem extends for at least five miles either side of the location that has been marked.
Please could you look into this and then post back to this same report, which I am officially making. I can see that many other people have made similar reports over the years, yet nothing is being done about it.
I have been travelling this road every day of the week for the past two and a half years, and I can safely say that I have never seen any kind of cleaning or maintenance carried out to ensure that the water can flow properly into these drains.

Thank you for making your report. We have asked our inspection team to attend this location and assess the issue.
If any work is needed, they will arrange for this to happen. Should no immediate work be required we will continue to monitor this during our regular inspections.
Although we always aim to complete repairs as quickly as possible, timescales do vary as we try to minimise disruption to customers by combining activities into single closures and always ensuring the safety of our people.
