Flag attached to stanchion

Reported via mobile in the Structures (eg bridges, fencing, noise barriers) (NH) category anonymously at 18:19, Monday 2 March 2026

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 9032148.

Hello,

For about a year now a Union flag has been attached to a stanchion above the footbridge that crosses the A45 in Northamptonshire at Rushden Lakes. The flag is a distraction for motorists at a busy junction, and has been placed in position by supporters of far right groups like Britain First.

The Northamptonshire Race Equality Council has conducted a survey on the flags issue recently, and has found that some members of black and ethnic minority groups find them to be intimidating and harmful to their mental wellbeing. The people responsible for positioning the flags have a clear racist agenda.

North Northamptonshire Council has agreed to remove flags from lampposts and street furniture in response to complaints from residents, but does not have responsibility for the footbridge in question.

I would be grateful if you could remove the flag from the bridge at your convenience.

Thank you.

Regards,

John Clarke.
