Leeming to Ripon A1 southbound roadworks

The southbound nearside lane of the A1 is rightly coned off between Leeming and Ripon and engineers have allocated a 50mph limit on the two remaining lanes, however no-one is observing it. As an IAM Road smart qualified driver I naturally complied with the limit but the reason I'm contacting is because this put myself and passenger in a very vulnerable dangerous position as others passed at their usual motorway speeds and HGVs tailgated in their haste to move in to the overtaking lane. It seemed we were the only ones complying with the engineer's temporary speed limit. May I respectfully request that consideration be given to increasing the limit to 60 mph or that average speed cameras are installed. Obviously you know best, but due to the behaviour of other drivers, compliance with the 50mph limit really does not feel safe on that stretch.
