Litter along the side of the motorway, both directions

Reported via mobile in the Main Carriageway (NH) category anonymously at 09:22, Friday 6 February 2026

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 8850646.

There is tons of litter on both sides of the M3 carriageway between junction 2 and junction 8. This must be grade C or D and not meeting National Highways’ statutory target for cleanliness.

Updates

  • Thank you for contacting National Highways about litter on the M3 between junctions 2 and 8.

Our Litter Strategy outlines our commitment to maintaining a predominantly litter free network without compromising safety. We conduct weekly inspections of our network, grading areas according to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) Code of Practice. We’ve carried out a number of litter picks along this stretch of the M3, and more are already planned and on schedule focusing on the worst affected areas.

Unfortunately, littering by road users does have a noticeable impact on some of our roads. We work hard to keep the network clean and safe, and we plan our litter-picking activities carefully to protect both road users and our workforce. These activities often require lane closures, and we usually combine our reactive litter picks with other maintenance work which can result in what appears to be a delayed response; however, it does minimise disruption caused to road users.

Thank you again for contacting us and for your concern about keeping our roads tidy.

    Kind regards

    National Highways
