Significant debris and litter

Reported via mobile in the Main Carriageway (NH) category anonymously at 20:10, Tuesday 3 February 2026

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 8832203.

The A421 between Marston junction and Cardington junction (both directions) has significant amounts of litter on the hard shoulder and central reservation. This includes deceased animals, large plastic drums, tyres and excessive amounts of loose litter. There are large accumulatioms under bridges. This is a risk to blowing on to the dual carriageway but also presents a health and safety risk should anyones vehicle breakdown and persons exit their car. Bedford Borough Council is responsible for little picking but areas of this road have been missed for over 2 years, resulting in a large accumulation. Given the danger, please can this be raised with them as a priority for resolution. Thank you

Updates

  • Thank you for contacting National Highways.

We at National Highways share your frustration regarding litter on and around the road network. We agree litter is a serious issue. It harms the environment, is an eyesore and puts road workers at risk when they collect it. Our priority is to keep our roads safe and well maintained.

As you know, Bedford Borough Council (BBC) is the authority responsible for litter removal from the A421.

While we strive to improve collaboration with our local authority partners, including Bedford Borough Council, through the sharing traffic management plans and regular grading of the A421, it remains BBC's responsibility under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 to remove litter. Please contact them directly to resolve this issue.

    Kind regards, National Highways
