Significant build-up of litter and rubbish
Reported via mobile in the Main Carriageway (NH) category anonymously at 09:32, Thursday 29 January 2026
FixMyStreet ref: 8792560.
Location: A1 between Stotfold entry onto the A1 and Stevenage North junction Direction: Both southbound and northbound. There is a significant build-up of litter and rubbish along both the southbound and northbound carriageways on this stretch of the A1, including the verges and green areas. The volume and spread of waste suggest this area has not been cleaned or properly maintained for a long period of time, potentially years. Litter is present continuously along the roadside rather than in isolated areas, resulting in a very poor visual appearance and environmental concern. In addition, this situation creates a safety risk, particularly during windy conditions, as loose rubbish is blown onto the carriageway, posing a potential hazard to drivers and increasing the risk of distraction or sudden manoeuvres.

Thank you for contacting National Highways about litter.
We have passed your report to our local inspector who will review the issue as part of their next safety inspection and arrange any remedial action.
Littering by people is, unfortunately, a behaviour that has a big impact on some parts of our roads. We aim to keep our roads as tidy and free of litter as we can. Our litter picking is carefully planned to try to minimise the impact it has on road users and the safety of our people.
Litter picks often require lane closures, which are disruptive to traffic flow. To help reduce the frequency of this disruption, where we can, we usually combine our reactive litter picks with other maintenance work which can result in what appears to be a delayed response.
Kind regards National Highways
