Dead cat on the verge

Reported via mobile in the Off the carriageway (NH) category anonymously at 17:50, Monday 5 January 2026

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 8631018.

There is an animal that looks grey with a long tail perhaps a cat on the left of the road towards stevenage. The nearest sign to the poor animal I saw was 9434 - a yellow box to call in an emergency. it needs to be checked for a chip if it is a cat and the owner informed.

Updates

  • Thank you for contacting National Highways about the animal on our network.

Safety is our highest priority and any animals on the carriage way that pose a risk to vehicles and their occupants will be removed as quickly and safely as possible.

Household pets, such as a dogs and cats, will be retrieved, and we endeavour to reunite pets with their owners if they can be identified through microchips or other identification.

Wild animals, lying off the carriageway, on verges or the central reservation, are normally left to naturally decay. However, they will be removed if they are considered a hazard, a danger to public health or there is a statutory obligation for testing or removal.

Our local inspector team will make these assessments during their regular safety inspections.

Please Note: Due to a system error this response to your report has been delayed. Please accept our apologies for this.

    Kind regards National Highways
