Litter up the M11 and A11.

Reported via desktop in the Main Carriageway (NH) category anonymously at 10:18, Fri 26 December 2025

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 8591411.

There was litter all the way up the A11 from the M11 up until the roundabout for Thetford. It could have gone one longer but I turned off here. The lay-by had been cleared, I think by volunteers, but the road was terrible. Worse in some places than others.

40 years ago I used to do that drive every two weeks and you hardly saw any litter but now, it is terrible. Why don't you have litter cameras to catch these people?

Updates

  • Thank you for contacting National Highways about litter.

We have passed your report to our M11 inspector who will review the issue as part of their next safety inspection and arrange any remedial action.

Please Note: Under the Environmental Protection Act 1990, we’re responsible for collecting litter on England’s motorways and a few other strategic trunk roads. Local authorities are responsible for collecting litter on the remaining trunk and local roads, including the A11.

Littering by people is, unfortunately, a behaviour that has a big impact on some parts of our roads. We aim to keep our roads as tidy and free of litter as we can. Our litter picking is carefully planned to try to minimise the impact it has on road users and the safety of our people.

Litter picks often require lane closures, which are disruptive to traffic flow. To help reduce the frequency of this disruption, where we can, we usually combine our reactive litter picks with other maintenance work which can result in what appears to be a delayed response.

    Kind regards

    National Highways
