Lots of litter in layby

Reported via desktop in the Layby/ Emergency Area (NH) category anonymously at 20:51, Mon 22 December 2025

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 8582974.

Lots of rubbish including a double mattress in the vehicle refuge area. The drainage gullies in the central reservation on both sides of the central reservation are also full of leaf litter which is blocking the drains in this area. There are also several large tyres strewn along the central reservation and hard shoulder for several kilometres either side of distance marker 37.9.

Updates

  • Thank you for contacting National Highways about flags.

We have passed this to one of our local inspectors to confirm that this is on our property. Safety is our priority and we do all we can to protect those who use our roads. Items such as flags attached to a bridge could pose a danger to motorists on the road below and so may need to be removed for safety reasons.

    Kind regards

  • Thank you for contacting National Highways about litter.

We have passed your report to our local inspector who will review the issue as part of their next safety inspection and arrange any remedial action.

Littering by people is, unfortunately, a behaviour that has a big impact on some parts of our roads. We aim to keep our roads as tidy and free of litter as we can. Our litter picking is carefully planned to try to minimise the impact it has on road users and the safety of our people.

Litter picks often require lane closures, which are disruptive to traffic flow. To help reduce the frequency of this disruption, where we can, we usually combine our reactive litter picks with other maintenance work which can result in what appears to be a delayed response.

    Kind regards

    National Highways
