A frames / cones left

Reported via desktop in the Abandoned Materials (NH) category anonymously at 21:39, Thursday 6 November 2025

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 8386775.

Whilst I appreciate some materials are left between junction 7 and 8 of the M20 for Op Brock, surely after six years of it being in operation the hard shoulders and slip roads to both junctions could be tidied and the amount of frames and cones rationalised. The whole area is a sea of abandoned flashing cone lights, sign frames and cones. Surely more lasting solutions such as signs that are permanent themselves but covered up by panels installed. Given many visitors to the UK use the M20 and Maidstone Services, this would be their first impression and they must be shocked by what an untidy and messy state our highways are in.

Updates

  • Thank you for contacting National Highways regarding the redundant traffic management equipment. We appreciate you taking the time to share your observations about the condition of the M20 between junctions 7, 8 and 9.

Operation Brock is an important part of our traffic management strategy, ensuring that freight and passenger vehicles can continue to move safely and efficiently during periods of disruption at the ports. For this reason, some materials such as cones, frames, and signage remain on site to allow the system to be deployed quickly when needed.

Whilst the cones utilised for Operation Brock will remain. We will arrange for traffic our management partners to remove any traffic management that is no longer required. Where we have identified redundant equipment, this will be removed. However, in some cases we do leave items in place for future use or for safety reasons.

We recognise the importance of maintaining a tidy environment for all road users where possible, and your suggestions will be shared with the relevant teams for consideration. Thank you again for raising this matter with us.

    Kind regards,

    National Highways
