Speed restrictions left behind

Reported via desktop in the Old Roadworks Equipment (NH) category anonymously at 19:33, Fri 24 October 2025

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 8336288.

I am writing to ask why the 60MPH restriction has been left on a two mile stretch of the M4 west bound from Junction 12. The signs have been there at least three weeks long after the re-reserfacing and road markings being replaced?

Updates

  • Thank you for contacting National Highways regarding the redundant traffic management equipment.

Since Thursday 23rd October 2025, a lane 1 closure had to be installed on the Eastbound carriageway over the M4 Welford Viaduct (which is between junction 14 to 13) due to a defective / broken bridge joint.

The lane closure was implemented for the safety of road users as there is a section of bridge joint that is missing from lane 1 on the carriageway.

Unfortunately due to the size of this viaduct, some elements of the joints are bespoke and will take time to be produced. We are trying to procure these specialist parts as quickly as possible to make the repair and lift the lane closure, but unfortunately we can't confirm a date at present. This is why you'll see the lane closure in place, with no works going on at present. We appreciate the frustration this lane closure and congestion will cause, but due to the safety concerns the lane unfortunately cannot be re-opened or the restrictions lifted until the repair is made.

    Kind regards

    National Highways
