Traffic sequencing junction 8/9 M4

Reported via mobile in the Traffic lights (NH) category anonymously at 09:30, Wed 22 October 2025

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 8324968.

Many thanks for your reply to Fix My Street ref:8306139. Regarding light phasing of Junction 8/9 M4. You asked for an update on any further problems after the detection loops have been recommissioned. Unfortunately the problem does not seem to be resolved. Yesterday in the morning the traffic was backing up just after junction 10 eastbound all the way to junction 8/9. In the evening I. noticed when the lights south A404 were green, the direct next set of lights on the roundabout were red, causing no flow of traffic away from the A404 south. Again this morning 22.10.25 there were long tail backs. The traffic problem is also being flagged on the local radio. Please can you look into the riming again. Many thanks

Updates

  • Thank you for making your report. We have investigated this site numerous times in recent weeks. There appears to be no fundamental fault in the traffic signal controller. There is an issue with our ability to remotely connect to the controller, which we thought was down to an issue on the BT line however following that being resolved we are still unable to connect. This does not necessarily cause the junction to operate poorly although it does hamper our ability to remotely monitor the site and make changes.

We have instructed a specialist contractor to resolve the communications issues and they expect to be on site next week.

We continue to investigate the root cause of the congestion (vehicle detector loop faults, faulty hardware, incorrect plans triggering at certain times) however this will be aided greatly by re-establishing the remote connection.

    Kind regards National Highways
