Dead animals on side of the road
Reported via desktop in the Off the carriageway (NH) category anonymously at 13:22, Mon 20 October 2025
Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 8317378.
I am not 100% of the animals location, but there are several dead animals between the Thickthorn exit and the Easton roundabout, including a large badger. It is very upsetting to see these majestic animals lying on the side of the road and rotting over weeks on end. I didn't personally hit an animal, but I can't believe that there is not an agency involved in collecting dead animals on a regular basis (at least once per week) from the main roads. It is upsetting for people travelling past them on a regular basis and also degrading for the animals. Please advise how often you are collecting dead animals from our main roads.
Updates
-
Thank you for contacting National Highways about animals on our network.
Safety is our highest priority and any animals on the carriage way that pose a risk to vehicles and their occupants will be removed as quickly and safely as possible.
Household pets, such as a dogs and cats, will be retrieved, and we endeavour to reunite pets with their owners if they can be identified through microchips or other identification.
Wild animals, lying off the carriageway, on verges or the central reservation, are normally left to naturally decay. However, they will be removed if they are considered a hazard, a danger to public health or there is a statutory obligation for testing or removal.
Our local inspector team will make these assessments during their regular safety inspections.
Kind regards National Highways
