Street lights not working

Reported via desktop in the Not working (NH) category anonymously at 16:33, Thu 2 October 2025

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 8244845.

Hi,

The lights on the canal bridge underpass are not working and have not been for some time, can these be replaced? I have raised these both with the Canal & River Trust and Tameside Council, both have confirmed that National Highways would maintain these - I have had the following response from Tameside Council:

These lights are the responsibility of National Highways to maintain. For the following reasons: • They are attached to a National Highways bridge • They were not installed by Tameside Council • The footpath & canal that they provide lighting for do not belong to the council • There are no lighting columns or electrical feeds which belong to the council on this footpath We have requested electrical drawings from Electricity North West which show that there is no electrical supply on the footpath. Which leads us to the conclusion that the only place the electrical supply for these lights can come from is the bridge itself via the streetlights on the motorway above. Below is the council’s adopted land map for the area and also the street lighting department’s asset map; showing that we neither own the land nor do we have any nearby assets from which the lights could be fed electrically. ------------- Please can you arrange for these lights to be fixed?
