Pigeon roosting

Reported via desktop in the Structures (eg bridges, fencing, noise barriers) (NH) category by Councillor Anne Collins at 18:21, Wed 1 October 2025

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 8240099.

I am a local councillor at Wigan Borough Council. Residents have complained to me about the number of pigeons that roost on the underside of the bridge that takes the M6 over Gathurst Road in Orrell, Wigan. The pavement under the bridge is at times impassable due to the amount of pigeon droppings which cause the pavement to be slippery and unhygienic. There have also been issues with pigeon carcasses cluttering the pavement. The problem appears to have become more prevalent over the last few years. Would National Highways please consider installing netting on the underside of the bridge to prevent the birds roosting there? (Netting was installed on the underside of a bridge nearby in Spring Road and this appears to have resolved a similar issue).
