Flags on lamp posts

Reported via mobile in the Flyposting (NH) category anonymously at 18:53, Sunday 21 September 2025

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 8194739.

I am writing to report the placement of a number of St George's flags on lampposts in this area. I am concerned about the safety of these flags, as they are not securely attached to public infrastructure and could pose a risk to pedestrians and drivers. As I understand it, the Highways Act 1980 makes it an offence to place items on public lampposts without authorisation. Beyond the safety issue, I am also concerned about the divisive impact these flags are having on our community. I believe their presence causes racial tension and unease. I would appreciate it you could address this matter and arrange for the safe removal of these unauthorised flags. This would help to maintain both public safety and community cohesion.

Updates

  • Thank you for contacting National Highways about flags.

We have passed this to one of our local inspectors to confirm that this is on our property. Safety is our priority and we do all we can to protect those who use our roads. Items such as flags attached to a bridge could pose a danger to motorists on the road below and so may need to be removed for safety reasons.

    Kind regards
