Flags on bridges

Reported via mobile in the Structures (eg bridges, fencing, noise barriers) (NH) category anonymously at 21:13, Sat 30 August 2025

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 8096589.

Travelling north and south down the m6 from the Midlands to the north West there are a number of flags on motorway bridges. These appear to have been placed here without permission of the Highways Agency. Many of these flags are the English national flag but there are some Reform uk flags. Putting aside the implicit issues with those choosing to display the English flag, it would seem totally inappropriate for political party flags to be displayed from motorway bridges.

Are there plans to remove these flags?

Updates

  • Thank you for making your report. We have asked our inspection team to attend this location and assess the issue.

Safety is our priority, and we do all we can to protect those who use our roads. Items such as flags attached to a bridge could pose a danger to motorists on the road below and so may need to be removed for safety reasons.

Although we always aim to complete works as quickly as possible, timescales do vary as we try to minimise disruption to customers by combining activities into single closures and always ensuring the safety of our people.

    Kind regards
