Thank you for your report.
We understand that premature leaf shedding may cause concerns, and we appreciate you bringing the matter to our attention.
Our team has confirmed that the poplar trees that are shedding their leaves earlier than usual doesn’t indicate that the trees are dying or pose any safety risk.
The UK has recently experienced extended periods of hot and dry weather, which can cause leaves to brown and fall prematurely. These conditions have also led to early berry ripening and hedgerows taking on an autumnal appearance. For further insight, you may find this article from the Met Office helpful https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/ blog/ 2025/ why-does-it-feel-like-autumn-already
Regarding vegetation located away from the immediate carriageway and on land owned by us, our policy is to allow natural growth unless it presents a safety concern. Maintenance is carried out only on dead or damaged trees, or vegetation identified as a safety risk, as part of our scheduled three-year inspection programme. Please be assured that if any concerns about diseased trees arise during these inspections, they will be addressed accordingly.
If you would like more information about our rolling 3-year tree surveys and maintenance programme, please visit our webpage at https://nationalhighways.co.uk/ our-work/ environment/ nature/ tree-management/
