Traffic travelling in both directions past Stonehenge.

This has long been a nightmare spot mainly due to slow moving vehicles looking at the stones. Travelling eastward the road becomes dual carriage way so this creates an unnecessary jam sometimes past the previous roundabout. Why not put a screen there to stop rubber neckers and improve the overall safety of that piece of road.

Thank you for your report about the A303 passing Stonehenge.
We appreciate you contacting us with your observation and valued suggestion.
Screening along the A303 would indeed be a logical and potentially effective solution for the safety problems that arise from drivers looking at the Stones. It is however not a solution that English Heritage (which manages the Stonehenge monument) would allow.
The screening solution was studied by us several years ago and the option (screening with either fencing or tree lines or both) was objected to by English Heritage, because the open views and open landscape are considered an integral part of the Stonehenge monument. Any screening would therefore be to the detriment of the monument and the prehistoric landscape and not something we could implement.
