Abandoned cones / lane closure equipment

Reported via mobile in the Repairs and road layout (NH) category anonymously at 09:17, Wednesday 6 August 2025

FixMyStreet ref: 7985724.

It seems the contractor responsible for fixing the broken fence has left the lane closure in place.

Given the lane closure was reported on 27th March 2025 (having already been in place for months) it is inconceivable and completed untenable that the works would still be incomplete 5 months after the previous complaint about incomplete works.

Unless Highway are completely incompetent I can only come to the logical conclusion that the works are complete but the contractor has failed to remove the cones and lane closure.

Updates

  • Dear Jack Taylor

Thank you for your Fix my Street report regarding the lane closure on the A1 at Water Newton.

As you correctly stated early this year following a serious incident both the roadside barrier and carriageway culvert retaining wall beneath the road surface were severely damaged.

Given the complicity of the repair task, we had to appoint a design team to undertake site investigations and produce a report of the options that are available which is why we’ve been unable to move forward with this as quickly as we would’ve liked.

This report has now been made available to us and the preferred option is to realign the southbound carriageway. Following confirmation of this option, plans are now in place to start work on site in September and these will be undertaken under 6 weekend closures on the southbound carriageway. Once the additional lane is in place it’ll allow us to construct the permanent repair, this repair will require extensive works to make good to the damage caused to the culvert under the A1.

We’re challenging our contractors to accelerate this process so that the public can see that we’re actively in the process of repairs, we’ll also be reviewing what information we can put on our web page to increase awareness of the actual problem and what we’re doing. Thank you again for contacting us. If you need more information about this, please feel free to contact our Customer Contact Centre on 0300 123 5000 or by email at info@nationalhighways.co.uk Kind regards National Highways.
