50 and 40 signs up for months

Reported via mobile in the Structures (eg bridges, fencing, noise barriers) (NH) category anonymously at 17:41, Wed 30 July 2025

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 7956278.

The 50 and 40 signs have been up for months with absolutely no work undertaken. In rush hour this builds up traffic and there appears to be no reason for these signs to still be there

  • Thank you for submitting this report.

The 40mph speed restrictions on the M27 in this area are due to parapet damage on Hamble Bridge. Further restrictions from 50mph to 40mph have been put in place as it is our opinion that if the area is struck again at a high speed this would cause serious risk to motorists going through the end of the parapet.

Where a parapet is damaged there are generally two options, either a temporary barrier needs to be installed (which in this case would mean closing lane 1 of the motorway), or the speed limit needs to be reduced. The 40mph speed restriction will remain in place at this location, for safety reasons, until the parapet is repaired.

Specialist contractors have carried out assessments of the damage and the replacement parts are being manufactured. Works will take place once all the materials are available. Our contractor is currently planning to repair the parapet damage on the eastbound carriageway at M27 River Hamble at the earliest opportunity, at present we still don’t have a date for this to be carried out unfortunately.

    Kind regards National Highways
