Poor timing
Reported via iOS in the Traffic lights (NH) category anonymously at 08:30, Tue 1 July 2025
Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 7789413.
I’m writing out of sheer frustration regarding the traffic light sequence at M1 Junction 14 southbound, specifically on the exit slip road.
This is no longer just a case of traffic mismanagement — it’s a serious safety hazard. The current signal timing is creating severe tailbacks directly onto the M1 main carriageway, putting lives at risk on one of the UK’s busiest motorways.
The light cycle appears completely unfit for the volume of traffic using this junction. Vehicles are queueing back onto live lanes of the motorway, forcing drivers to perform dangerous braking maneuvers at 70mph and creating the perfect conditions for a multi-vehicle pile-up. It’s as though this setup has been designed without any consideration for flow or safety — frankly, it feels like an accident is being engineered, not prevented.
I have raised this issue before through civil channels, and nothing has been done. At this point, it’s not just frustrating — it’s infuriating. Someone will be seriously injured or killed if this is left unresolved.
I strongly urge you to: • Review the current light sequence timings as a priority • Examine any recent changes made to the setup at this junction • Monitor the location during peak times via your traffic cameras
The situation is urgent. If you’re in doubt, I invite you to come down during rush hour and witness the chaos firsthand. This cannot be allowed to continue.
