Capacity issue following road works

Reported via mobile in the Flooding/drainage (NH) category anonymously at 11:21, Saturday 14 June 2025

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 7708600.

I bring to your attention a serious issue with the drainage on the A595 at Whitehaven at the corner Toll Bar Crescent.

Following a recent heavy downpour the corner floods right across the road preventing traffic passing until waters recede.

This has been occurring ever since the road was closed in the summer of 2023 to improve the drainage, and occurs whenever there is a prolonged period of rain. This has moved the problem further towards the location mentioned above.

It seems that it may be a capacity issue which seems to me very strange as the carrier pipe was heavily upgraded in the works which is why the road was closed over a weekend.

This issue requires urgent investigation and intervention with the possible use of drain dye and camera to ascertain what the issue is.

We’ve never had issues at this corner until the so called improvement works were carried out. This is the main road into and out of Whitehaven and if users of the public highway cannot pass, this puts excessive strain on local authority network which is unsuitable for large traffic.

Updates

  • Thank you for making your report. We have asked our inspection team to attend this location and assess the issue.

If any work is needed, they will arrange for this to happen. Should no immediate work be required we will continue to monitor this during our regular inspections.

Although we always aim to complete repairs as quickly as possible, timescales do vary as we try to minimise disruption to customers by combining activities into single closures and always ensuring the safety of our people.

    Kind regards National Highways
