Temporary speed limit being ignored by all

Reported via mobile in the Abandoned Materials (NH) category anonymously at 06:59, Thu 5 June 2025

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 7664481.

There has been temporary speed limit signs along the A27 between emsworth and Havant for months now and noone especially lorry driver's are keeping even attempting to be close to these limits, people's lives are at stake here, and frankly I'm surprised there hasn't been an accident yet, though I have seen some close calls. Please just fix what needs to be fixed so the signs can be removed.

Updates

  • Thank you for contacting National Highways regarding the Speed Restriction currently in place.

I appreciate your concerns and frustrations with the speed restrictions, please accept our apologies for any inconvenience this has caused you. It’s never our intention to inconvenience road users on our network unnecessarily.

On the A27 in this area, a temporary speed limit has been installed until repairs to a damaged parapet can be completed. The reduction in speed is to avoid any further accidents involving the public or any more damage to the parapet. We’re looking to complete a permanent repair at the earliest opportunity but at present we don't yet have date set.

Safety is our priority and in cases where we cannot do an immediate and permanent repair, we have to ensure that measures such as speed restrictions are put in place until we can.

Whilst we understand the frustration and impact poor driver behaviour can have on other road users, we don’t have any enforcement powers to stop drivers that you mention ignoring the temporary speed limits in place. Any enforcement to tackle driver behaviour is conducted by the local police and you can report this calling 101.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

    Kind regards National Highways
