Reported via mobile in the Electronic Sign (NH) category anonymously at 10:05, Sunday 4 May 2025
Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 7520425.
The electronic signage displays there is are queue where there are none. Requires a speed reduction which is causing a traffic issue in the flow of traffic. Electronic signage immediately shows after national speed limited apply.

Thank you for your email to our Customer Contact Centre on 4 May 2025 about speed limits displayed on the A14 junctions 22 to 23. I am replying as a team member responsible for the management of the A14.
I understand your frustration at seeing signage set without a valid reason.
After investigating, I can see that speed signage was activated by our Motorway Incident Detection and Automated Signalling system (MIDAS), due to queue detection ahead.
MIDAS is a series of electro-magnetic loops cut into the road surface, that detect the speed and volume of traffic passing over them.
Traffic flows between Huntingdon and Cambridge tend to be predictable during the morning and evening peaks. We also see the same predictability on Saturday mornings and bank holiday weekends. During weekday rush hours traffic flows tend to be heavier eastbound in the morning and westbound in the evening as people go to and return from work.
This section is often busier than other junctions as this is where both the A14 and M11 merge. There is a long slip road and the number of lanes decrease. This means the same volume of traffic in less road space which slows the flow.
Thank you again for contacting us. If you need more information about this, please feel free to contact me. For anything else, please contact our Customer Contact Centre on 0300 123 500 or by email at info@highwaysengland.co.uk
