Huge amount of litter along slipways

Reported via mobile in the Layby/ Emergency Area (NH) category anonymously at 08:31, Tuesday 15 April 2025

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 7436467.

Huge amount of litter on exit slipways and roundabout mixed into the overgrown vegetation can this be cut back/moved and the litter be removed? The litter/fly tipping/fly posting / old road cones has been there several years. Is is possible to have the odd litter signage in place around jct 36 like the ones in the south region. Reported 18 months ago but nothing has happened. Many thanks.

  • Thank you for your report.

We clear litter and vegetation periodically to align to the seasons. National Highways is not an enforcement agency, but we do work with various local authorities and anti-litter organisations aiming to tackle littering at source and make littering socially unacceptable.

Litter signage is a national initiative, so we do not necessarily pick where these signs are displayed. We litter pick somewhere on the network every single day. Based on the Defra Code of Practice we constantly grade our network. If it degrades, we’ll return it to the required standard within the timescales set out in the Code of Practice. We always aim to do this quicker than the legal requirement wherever possible. We’re clearing litter on some parts of our network within 3 to 5 working days, or immediately if it’s a hazard to traffic.

I can confirm this junction will be tended to in May/June 2025.

    Kind regards
