Car come off motorway and through fence!!

Reported via mobile in the Structures (eg bridges, fencing, noise barriers) (NH) category anonymously at 19:32, Monday 14 April 2025

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 7435311.

This is the second car in the last year to come off the motorway and end up smashed up on the bridleway!! The wooden fence is not good enough to stop a vehicle traveling at 70+ mph just a few metres away - with no embankment or crash barrier this bridleway has become dangerous!! A cyclist had literally just gone up the bridleway moments before the car came through the fence. Both incidents have happened in good weather! And luckily not involved a HGV!!

Updates

  • Thank you for contacting National Highways.

We've checked and can confirm wooden post and rail fences are the Nationally accepted standard for motorway boundaries where there are no significant level differences between the motorway and the surrounding land or where there are no significant collision obstructions close to the carriageway.

Changes to our network are planned in advance. Having reviewed our programme we can see no imminent changes in this area.

However, we are making enquiries with the Police to see if there are any similarities in the incidents that have taken place to determine if there's anything we can do to prevent future collisions.

    Kind regards

    National Highways
