Further question to litter and highways equipment

Reported via desktop in the Slip Roads (NH) category anonymously at 22:42, Tuesday 25 March 2025

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 7338242.

With regards to litter clearance, please can you advise how often this is carried out? Surely it makes sense to do this before foliage starts to grow again? I understand about brock sign frames being left in situ, albeit looking unsightly, but what about the abandoned sand bags, broken lights and cones which are not related to this?

Updates

  • Thank you for contacting National Highways about litter.

Littering by people is, unfortunately, a behaviour that has a big impact on some parts of our roads. We aim to keep our roads as tidy and free of litter as we can. Our litter picking is planned to try to minimise the impact it has on road users and the safety of our people. Our normal litter maintenance programme will run periodically twice a year. In addition to this, we’ll carry out litter inspections along the M20 to review litter levels in accordance with the Defra Code of Practice. If necessary we’ll raise additional jobs to instruct our maintenance partners to litter pick sections of our network outside of cyclic maiantence if litter exceed levels in accordance with the Defra Code of Practice.

Litter picks often require lane closures, which are disruptive to traffic flow. To help reduce the frequency of this disruption, where we can, we usually combine our reactive litter picks with other maintenance work which can result in what appears to be a delayed response. We’re there is redundant traffic management equipment and sandbags, this will be removed if it's no longer required as part of any clearance work that may take place.

    Kind regards

    National Highway
