Signs and cones

Reported via mobile in the Flytipping (NH) category anonymously at 21:11, Thursday 20 March 2025

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 7312048.

The whole stretch of the m23 and a23 is littered with old cones and old sign boards. Why don’t you cleanup after roadworks. There are hundreds of cones just thrown into the central reservation or tossed up embankments. Old rusty signs and just pushed over tot he side with sandbags still attached. Why don’t you clear this mess up, it will cause a massive issue and an accident one day

  • Thank you for your report.

We're aware of the amount of redundant temporary traffic management apparatus across our roads and we've been working with our traffic management partners to address this.

On the A23/M23 route our partners when passing been clearing items owned by them and associated with schemes and maintenance works since Feb, and have made a significant effort in the past week on the M23 whilst setting-up for the London-Brighton bearings scheme (and under full carriageway closures). We were out yesterday (24 March) on the M23 inspecting the new temporary traffic management (TTM) and on checking areas noted in January it was clear that many items had already been removed. This said, there were still some items that needed to be removed and will be in the coming days/weeks and months as we undertake numerous TTM set-ups for the aforementioned scheme.

There is a significant amount of TTM on the M23 which will be in-situ until December this year, there is also signage in advance of both junctions which is used for overnight/weekend closures of the M23/associated slip-roads.

Please be assured were are working to make a difference whilst on-site and where items can be reached/removed safely.

I hope this information is helpful and that you start to notice an improvement over the coming weeks.

    Kind regards

    National Highways
