Dangerous speed limit A1 Felton to Alnwick

Reported via mobile in the Pavement/footpath/cycleway/bridleway issue (NH) category anonymously at 21:56, Monday 10 March 2025

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 7257749.

The A1 dual carriageway section between Felton and Alnwick has a speed limit of 70mph. It is crossed by a series of junctions designed in the 1950s and used by pedestrians and cyclists. Fatal and serious accidents are a frequent occurrence. We cannot afford to upgrade the road to modern standards but imposing a 50mph limit would save lives. Please can we reduce the speed limit to 50mph?

Updates

  • Thank you for your report. We appreciate your concerns.

The Department for Transport indicates that a speed limit of 60mph is appropriate for most high-quality A and B class roads with few bends and accesses. A review of this length of the A1 confirms that this is the case.

As part of responding to your enquiry, we have taken the opportunity to review the injury collision record for this section of network. This has not identified a notable collision record. As there are currently few pedestrian facilities along the A1 near Scremerston and there is not a notable safety collision record, therefore we have no justification to promote a reduction in speed limit here.

Furthermore, we have reached out to our colleagues at Northumbria Police who have confirmed that they are not aware of an issue with speeding on this section of network.

As a result of the above, we currently have no plans to lower the speed limit on the A1 near Berwick.

Safety is our number one priority at National Highways, we keep our network under constant review and should a safety concern be highlighted, we will not hesitate to consider changes.

    Kind regards

    National Highways
