Uneven road with unstable subsurface

Reported via mobile in the Road surface (NH) category anonymously at 21:43, Friday 7 March 2025

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 7243877.

Am writing to formally raise a serious concern regarding the condition of the road, particularly on the southbound lanes, but also affecting the northbound lanes to some extent. The road exhibits severe undulations that are highly alarming, especially given the posted speed limit of 50 miles per hour. These conditions pose a significant safety hazard to all road users. As previously highlighted by other concerned individuals, the undulations cause heavy vehicles carrying loads, as well as smaller vehicles, to be tossed around unpredictably. This creates a dangerous driving environment, and it seems inevitable that a serious accident will occur if this issue is not addressed promptly. Furthermore, the road surface itself appears to have been compromised over time. The unevenness seems to have worsened, likely due to factors such as precipitation or subsurface erosion. It is apparent that the most severe areas of unevenness could be tracked and mapped over the past 15 months, indicating a progressive deterioration of the roadway. Failure to address this matter can only be interpreted as negligence toward the safety of road users. I urge you to take immediate action to investigate and rectify these hazardous conditions before they result in preventable accidents or injuries

  • Thank you for submitting this report.

We are aware of the pavement defects here and are working on a scheme to address these issues. The intervention is more than just resurfacing, as we will be essentially rebuilding a section of the carriageway to restore the surface level profile to what it should be, carrying out drainage repairs, and there will be consequential works to aspects such as the crash barriers and street lighting.

Unfortunately a timescale is currently unavailable but we will continue to monitor this location until works can be carried out.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

    Kind regards National Highways
