  • Thank you for making your report about litter.

Litter picking is done in accordance with GM 701 Asset Delivery Asset Maintenance Requirements (ADAMr). The baseline service level for litter picking is once a year. However, we use an intelligence-led approach to maintenance and operations to ensure value for money while keeping risks to road users, workers, and others at a safe level.

To determine litter requirements, our inspectors regularly check litter hotspots, which helps us plan routine cleaning. For the M5 (between Junctions 20 and 9), we pick litter on all slip roads quarterly for the nearside and annually for the offside. Slip roads at service areas like Gordano, Michaelwoods, and Gloucester are cleaned monthly, while the main carriageways in both directions are picked annually. Areas around Avonmouth require more frequent attention due to higher litter levels.

We are working to complete outstanding monthly and quarterly tasks, as well as the annual cleaning for some slip roads, before the end of the financial year. Reactive cleaning jobs are also scheduled as needed, based on inspections.

We're proud to support the Great British Spring Clean, running this year from 21 March to 6 April.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We'll inform our inspectors of the potential litter hotspots you've mentioned. This will help shape our maintenance plan for the 2025/26 period.

    Kind regards
