Litter and unused highways equipment

Reported via mobile in the Slip Roads (NH) category anonymously at 20:01, Friday 7 March 2025

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 7243607.

There is a large amount of litter around J8 M20 roundabout and the slip roads adjoining this. There is also a significant amount of highways equipment and broken items laying about making it look unsightly. Given this is a major route for visitors coming to Kent , it is not a good advert and a danger to wildlife. Please advise how soon this can be cleaned up.

Updates

  • Thank you for contacting National Highways about litter and traffic management equipment.

We’re currently in the process of arranging litter clearance activities along the M20. This is expected to take place in phases under overnight closures during the next few months and this will include junction 8.

Littering by people is, unfortunately, a behaviour that has a big impact on some parts of our roads. We aim to keep our roads as tidy and free of litter as we can. Our litter picking is carefully planned to try to minimise the impact it has on road users and the safety of our people.

Litter picks often require lane closures, which are disruptive to traffic flow. To help reduce the frequency of this disruption, where we can, we usually combine our reactive litter picks with other maintenance work which can result in what appears to be a delayed response.

In regard to the traffic management equipment at this location. There remain multiple items of traffic management at this location that are used for Operation Brook. This is left strategically on site to enable Brock to be implemented quickly if required and will remain on site for the foreseeable future.

    Kind regards

    National Highways
