Traffic light timings amendments / solution for Chelt Road Eeast joining elmbridge court roundabout

Reported via mobile in the Traffic lights (NH) category anonymously at 12:00, Friday 14 February 2025

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 7134200.

There are no traffic lights controlling exit from Cheltenham Road East (CRE) onto Elmbridge Court Roundabout (ECR). Please note this is the only exit that isn't light controlled- all the other joining roads to roundabout are.

At rush hours, the lights to the right of CRE don't give enough time for cars to exit safely. This issue is exacerbated by the prevalence of EV's and some drivers that accelerate quickly/ recklessly onto the roundabout. ECR is a high speed roundabout anyway due to being A40 connection to the bypass. Sometimes, no cars leave CRE in between lights due to sheer volume of traffic and lack of time in between lights turning red-green to get across 3 lanes safely. All of this contributes to traffic backing up Cheltenham Road East into Churchdown village, making it difficult for cars coming out of Pirton Fields estate too, and isn't ideal for promoting cleaner air.

Ultimately, adding lights at Cheltenham Road East entrance to Elmbridge Court Roundabout will solve the issue, but this is costly and long term. The easiest, instant and cost effective solution is to amend the timings on the existing lights on the roundabout to pause the traffic coming off the 4 lanes of the A40 and from around the roundabout to give cars more time to safely join the roundabout from CRE.

To summarise, solutions are: 1. Install lights at ECR for CRE joining traffic at minimal risk (again, this is the only roundabout entrance that isn't traffic light controlled, unsure why) 2. Provide greater waiting time on two sets of lights to right of CRE entrance to roundabout 3. Construct feeder lane from CRE going left onto A40 bypass to keep traffic flow moving. Option 2 is the quick win solution.

Thank you, looking forward to your response

Updates

  • Thank you for contacting National Highways.

We'll send an engineer to investigate the junction as there are detection loops on the non signalised exit that provide a time gap in the traffic when there is enough demand.

There could be a fault in this section so we'll investigate there.

If you require any further information, please contact our Customer Contact Centre on 0300 123 5000 or info@nationalhighways.co.uk.
