Stretches of darkness on M6

Reported via desktop in the Not working (NH) category anonymously at 18:18, Tuesday 11 February 2025

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 7120149.

Huge stretches of the M6 northbound between Manchester and Preston have no lighting at all and the road markings are now so faint that when it is dark and damp, they can’t be seen at all, making the whole venture extremely dangerous to navigate.

  • Thank you for contacting National Highways about the streetlights.

We have switched lighting off on this stretch of road to support the Department of Transport’s aim to reduce carbon emissions. These roads have been carefully chosen with all road users safety considered.

We are still using road lighting where it is needed, however, we are confident that we can use less of it without a significant impact on safety. We will continue to monitor this and may restore the lighting if the situation changes.

    Kind regards

    National Highways
