Junction 11A Northbound

Reported via mobile in the Structures (eg bridges, fencing, noise barriers) (NH) category anonymously at 16:34, Sunday 9 February 2025

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 7108450.

Is there any reason why there’s no direct access to the M5 northbound at this junction without diverting all the way to the A46 roundabout and coming back on myself every time, which is an unnecessary waste of time and fuel. At the Brockworth interchange roundabout this could be resolved by incorporating a left turn from B4641 onto the a417, which at present means you can only take the slip road off this Dual Carriageway, but not onto it. This issue doesn’t exist on the southbound however as there’s direct access Both on and off the M5. Coming off the Northbound it’s exactly the same, going all the way back on myself around the A46 roundabout. Why doesn’t the hard left turn coming off the M5 merge, at least partially, with the one coming off the southbound, considering both are duel lane roads, and thus would be feasible without disrupting the A417 traffic flow

Updates

  • Thank you for your report relating to Junction 11A of the M5, northbound access. Junction 11A was opened in 1995 in order to relieve congestion at Junction 11 to the north, which at that time was the main access for both Gloucester and Cheltenham. There is no northbound access to the M5 as Junction 11A was primarily designed to alleviate traffic heading south towards Gloucester and Cheltenham, by use of the A417. The focus was to provide southbound entry onto the M5 rather than northbound as a result of traffic flow patterns and development plans in the area at that time.

Whilst in the intervening 30 years there has been significant residential, retail and commercial development in the area, the main traffic flow patterns do not currently point to the need for a northbound access to the M5 at this location.

Furthermore, any proposals for a new access to the M5 northbound at this location would need to meet current design and safety standards. Therefore, would potentially require significant alterations to the overall existing junction layout. We would have to demonstrate a clear vehicular demand and that the benefits would be of value for public money. There would also be an environmental impact on the woodland that has development since the original junction was built.

We continually monitor our network and should traffic patterns alter sufficiently in this area then proposals to alleviate congestion could potentially be considered. However, any such proposals would require extensive studies, public consultations, design, securing of funding and approval from the Department for Transport. This would take a significant period of time and financial input.
