  • Thank you for taking the time to continue to report this issue to us.

I’m sorry to hear that some of our signals are still displaying differing speeds. I’d like to reassure you that I’ve escalated this within our Regional Operations Centre and with our technology team. I understand your frustrations when driving within changing speed limits, especially if it can appear to be as a result of drivers slowing down too drastically. Speed limits are usually set automatically in real time by a system known as MIDAS (Motorway Incident Detection and Automated Signalling), which uses loop detectors in the carriageway that collect real time data such as traffic count, speed and density. Signal gantries automatically display speed limits in response to the data recorded by the loop detectors. Unfortunately, on the date in question, there was a fault in one of the MIDAS loops in this area which prevented the other signals on the road to display correctly. Once discovered, the faulty MIDAS loop was immediately disabled and engineers were made aware. I’d like to thank you for bringing this to our attention, and I’m sorry for the inconvenience and concern this may have caused. This issue is being investigated by our technology team; however, you may still notice different speeds being displayed while they’re working to fix the problem.
