Excessive litter including tyre components between junction 61 Bowburn and junction 62 Durham northbound

Reported via mobile in the Main Carriageway (NH) category anonymously at 11:33, Tuesday 4 February 2025

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 7083370.

There is an extreme amount of litter and car parts including about 10 tyres/tyre treads on the grass verges after junction 61 northbound. The local vicinity of the motorway service is possibly one explanation for the discarded litter as the problem seems to get less the further down after junction 62. I have tried to report to the local council who inform me it is not their responsibility. The frequency of litter pick needs to improve, as we cannot get through to those motorist who continue with the practice of throwing out whilst travelling and breakdown companies not clearing up after breakdown or repairs

Updates

  • Thank you for contacting National Highways about litter.

We have passed your report to our local inspector who will review the issue as part of their next safety inspection and arrange any remedial action.

Littering by people is, unfortunately, a behaviour that has a big impact on some parts of our roads. We aim to keep our roads as tidy and free of litter as we can. Our litter picking is carefully planned to try to minimise the impact it has on road users and the safety of our people.

Litter picks often require lane closures, which are disruptive to traffic flow. To help reduce the frequency of this disruption, where we can, we usually combine our reactive litter picks with other maintenance work which can result in what appears to be a delayed response.

    Kind regards
