Collapsing steps / leaning retaining wall on land immediately adjacent to Highway

Reported via mobile in the Structures (eg bridges, fencing, noise barriers) (NH) category anonymously at 17:46, Sunday 2 February 2025

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 7073899.

Good evening I would like to report in my opinion potentially a dangerous cliff side structure and retaining wall on a property at the post code TN31 7HN on the A259 road at South Undercliff Rye. The structure is a large brick construction at the top of the cliff large parts of which have recently collapsed and rolled down the cliff and come to a halt against the retaining wall immediately adjoining the highway. Several other chunks of brickwork are half way down the cliff and the rest of the structure looks to be unstable. The roadside retaining wall is also in very poor condition it is leaning towards the road and has trees growing through the brick wall , if the above was to roll further it would end up on the road which would be an extremely hazardous thing for people and vehicles travelling along it, I would appreciate it if you could get someone to come and visit the site and see the situation. I have reported this issue to East Sussex Highways but they told me that it was not their responsibility and to report it to your department. I have pictures of the road and structures I could include but it seems that there is no way of attaching them to this report. I am aware that the issue is on private property but it immediately adjoins the A259 and I am concerned that if this situation is left it has the potential to cause a serious danger to users of the highway.
