Very high trees overhanging my garden

Reported via desktop in the Overgrown or obscuring view (NH) category anonymously at 11:09, Fri 31 January 2025

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 7063657.

I am enquiring about your maintenance plans for cutting back trees in surrounding areas of Holly Drive Waterlooville ? I have enquired before and you have told me I can cut back all trees overhanging my garden. The problem being the tree are incredibly high and out of our reach. My husband and I are elderly and are unable to climb up very high ladders or scaffold equipment. I encourage wildlife and enjoy these surrounding trees but I am sure before long they will be touching our conservatory. Please just send me a date or the highways plans as to when this area gets maintained and trimmed. This situation is causing me much stress as I can't imagine what the surrounding area will look like once the summer comes and the trees are in full foliage. As for the tress overhanging my garden how do you suggest elderly people maintain this ? Many thanks for your help I look forward to a positive response

  • Thank you for submitting this report

I’m sorry to hear about the tree that is overgrown near your home and thank you for bringing this to our attention. You may prune unprotected trees and hedges overhanging your land, and the roots growing beneath your land, up to your boundary. You don't need our permission to do this. We only take action when a tree causes a legal nuisance to neighbouring properties. This means a nuisance that is actionable in law. For example, when trees are actually touching buildings and causing direct damage

We have a wide network of trees to manage across the south of England and therefore with a limited budget we are required to concentrate our efforts within our maintainable boundaries and on customer safety and tree health, and not sunlight, leaf fall, seeding and bird droppings. Though we appreciate these factors are quite emotive to our customers, we do not have the funding to deliver these expectations across the entirety of our strategic road network.

I’m sorry we can’t be of more assistance on this occasion.

    Kind regards

    National Highways
