Lots of debris and litter from junction 21 to junction 22

Reported via desktop in the Layby/ Emergency Area (NH) category anonymously at 12:00, Tuesday 21 January 2025

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 7010857.

This section of motorway is littered all the way along with general litter old tyres odd shoes old road cones and in one place part of a child’s toy which has been there for 12 months. The grass grew up around this and now it’s died down it’s reappeared. All the grids are covered in litter and bits of plants and trees which I would imagine causes restricted drainage on a motorway that is already prone to flooding. I fully appreciate removing debris from motorways is a very dangerous job but surely once every 12 months is not too much to ask.

Updates

  • Thank you for contacting National Highways about litter.

We have passed your report to our local inspector who will review the issue as part of their next safety inspection and arrange any remedial action.

Littering by people is, unfortunately, a behaviour that has a big impact on some parts of our roads. We aim to keep our roads as tidy and free of litter as we can. Our litter picking is carefully planned to try to minimise the impact it has on road users and the safety of our people.

Litter picks often require lane closures, which are disruptive to traffic flow. To help reduce the frequency of this disruption, where we can, we usually combine our reactive litter picks with other maintenance work which can result in what appears to be a delayed response.

    Kind regards

    National Highways
