Lights on large sections of M53 turned off

Reported via mobile in the Not working (NH) category anonymously at 10:58, Friday 10 January 2025

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 6960841.

With the recent cold weather and snow, along with the dark nights/mornings, driving on large sections of the motorway have become extremely dangerous. Although this has been reported multiple times, theses issues have been responded to with this being with the aim of reducing light pollution. However given that safety is compromised, I believe that this concern should be further evaluated.

Updates

  • Thank you for contacting National Highways about the streetlights.

We have switched lighting off on this stretch of road to support the Department of Transport’s aim to reduce carbon emissions. These roads have been carefully chosen with all road users safety considered.

We are still using road lighting where it is needed, however, we are confident that we can use less of it without a significant impact on safety. We will continue to monitor this and may restore the lighting if the situation changes. We thank you for understanding and appreciate your feedback.

    Kind regards

    National Highways
